Fieldwork

Fieldwork is a landscape architecture studio in Rotterdam. We design parks, waterfronts, schoolyards and streets that store rainwater and get used every day.

Ground that holds the rain.

Rotterdam lies below the sea, and the rain keeps getting heavier. So we treat every square as a reservoir, every schoolyard as a sponge and every quay as a place the tide is allowed to visit.

Four projects. Each one is built to flood well.

01 a park the river comes into twice a day

Maashaven Tidal Park

Area
3.2 ha of tidal terraces
Year
2024

An old harbour basin given back to the tide. The terraces step down to the river, so the waterline moves through the park instead of stopping at a quay wall.

Low water: the lower terraces are a beach.

02 a basketball court that is also a reservoir

Spangen Water Square

Stores
0 m³ of stormwater
Year
2022

A sunken square in Spangen. In a cloudburst it fills and holds 1,700 m³ of rainwater so the streets around it stay dry. The rest of the year it is a basketball court.

Dry: the court is in play.

03 asphalt out, gardens in

Fourteen schoolyards

Greened
0 of 14 schoolyards
Years
2019–2025

For the city we took the asphalt out of fourteen schoolyards and put back soil, planting and room to play. Rain now soaks in where it lands.

04 salt on one side, fresh on the other

Afsluitdijk planting strategy

Status
In progress

A planting strategy for the dike between the Wadden Sea and the IJsselmeer: what can take the salt wind on one side and the fresh water on the other.

what we design

Places that work wet and dry.

  1. 01

    Parks

Places the city can flood into and still use the next morning.

  2. 02

    Waterfronts

Edges where the tide is part of the design, not a problem behind a wall.

  3. 03

    Schoolyards

Asphalt swapped for soil, shade and somewhere to climb.

  4. 04

    Climate streets

Streets that keep rainwater where it falls, in planted verges and open gutters.

Who we design for.

Municipalities

Water squares, schoolyard programmes and climate-adaptive streets. We design from the catchment down to the kerb, and we draw the planting as carefully as the drainage.

Developers

Landscape that does the water work on site: storage, infiltration and planting that makes a scheme better to live next to, in a downpour and on a dry afternoon.

the studio

Twenty-two people, one model table.

Fieldwork was founded by Mirte Bakker and Joost van Laar. We are a studio of 22 in Rotterdam, and we still work most things out by cutting, layering and moving pieces of a model around a table.
